First UO African American Female Grad was a Music Student

February 12, 2016—In honor of Black History Month, the UO Special Collections and University Archives Blog has launched a special series on African American “firsts” at the UO with an article covering Nellie Louise Franklin, a University of Oregon music student who was the first documented African American woman to graduate from the university.

The article, authored by student research assistant and UO undergraduate student Paulla Santos, paints a biographical sketch of Franklin, including her childhood and young adulthood in the 1910s and 20s.
