General Duties

The Office of Communications is responsible for the creation and maintenance of:

Print publications

  • Calendar of Events
  • Admissions recruiting viewbook (annual)
  • Ledger Lines alumni magazine (annual)

Concert and event publicity

  • Printed programs for concerts and events
  • Outreach methods such as posters, flyers, print advertisements, and radio announcements
  • Press releases

Digital communications

  • Content on the large digital monitors throughout the FMB and Gerlinger Annex
  • Content on the small digital wayfinding tablets throughout the FMB
  • Text content, photography, and design of the SOMD website,
  • The school’s social media presence
  • Video production

Services Provided

Concert and event publicity

  • Each academic term, the faculty is reminded to provide information on the following term’s concerts and events. This request is usually as early as two months prior to the start of the term, to meet print deadlines.
  • Some faculty members secure funds to support publicity and marketing for events. Production of paid publicity packages requires at least three weeks’ lead-time.
  • All concerts and events receive some publicity and marketing support, even those with no budget.

Articles and profiles

  • Faculty, staff, and students can send leads and tips for profiles of research, teaching, and performances by faculty, students, and alumni.
  • Faculty and staff members can arrange with the communications staff for professional-level photography of themselves (headshots), their students, their studios, and their events and activities.

Website bios

  • Each member of the faculty and staff has an online bio webpage. SOMD employees are welcome to email updates to the communications staff.
