Guitar Performance

There are a number of courses open to people wishing to study guitar at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance. Beginning level group instruction is offered as well as private instruction. Serious students can pursue undergraduate performance degrees in the following:

Classical guitar majors are required to perform in a guitar chamber ensemble for three terms during the course of their studies.

Guitarists interested in a jazz studies degree, please visit the jazz studies website for more information.

The studio guitar performance degree is one that focuses on a broad study of American guitar styles, including jazz, rock, fingerstyle, blues, funk, Brazilian, R & B, and the like. Although, we currently don’t have instructors that specialize in hard rock, speed metal, and similar styles, we try to give students the skills to cover a wide variety of different guitar styles. Central to the degree are developing music reading on the guitar, a wide ranging chord, scale, and arpeggio vocabulary, and skills specific to the styles mentioned above.

Guitarists are encouraged to audition for small and large jazz ensembles, as well as form their own bands and recording projects. Our graduates go on to be professional performer and/or teachers.

Contact the appropriate instructor, the Undergraduate Admissions Office, or the undergraduate music adviser for more information.
