Orff Schulwerk Teacher Training Course, Level I

Course Overview
This course is designed to develop understanding of the teaching and learning process using the Orff Schulwerk approach to music and movement. The daily schedule includes focus on rhythm, melody, Orff instruments, movement, recorder playing, improvisation, musicianship, Orff theory, orchestration, and pedagogy/special topics sessions. Levels
Level I
Anyone with formal music training wishing to acquire basic knowledge and pedagogic foundation in the Orff Schulwerk approach may enroll. An undergraduate degree in music, or equivalent study, is strongly recommended. To receive a Level I certificate, participants must attend all sessions and successfully complete all assignments.

Instructors
Amy Beegle – Level I, Basic & Pedagogy
Amy Beegle has been teaching music to children in school settings for twelve years and is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and teaches music to "at-risk" children in an after-school program. She completed her BME from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, her MAME at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and her PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she studied music education and ethnomusicology. She has completed 3 Levels and 2 Master Classes in Orff Schulwerk at the University of Northern Colorado and the University of St. Thomas. She has presented nationally and internationally, including AOSA National Conferences, and her publications include articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Journal of Historical Research, the Music Educators Journal, General Music Today, the Orff Echo, and the Kodály Envoy.

Ann Palmason - Recorder and Movement
Ann Palmason is a co-founder and Past President of the Evergreen Orff Chapter and served on the American Orff-Schulwerk Board of Trustees as a Regional Rep. She has taught in private and public schools, church arts programs for children, and has led numerous workshops and courses for music teachers. In Orff-Schulwerk, she has twice earned the Master's Level and has taught Level I at the University of Alaska and Seattle Pacific University. A career highlight for her has been to conduct several productions of The Christmas Story by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman at Plymouth Congregational Church in Seattle. Currently, she teaches grades K-5 in the Mercer Island School District. Her Master's Degree, through Leslie University, culminated with a set of interviews that illuminated the inner spirit and passion of working artists.

3. Recorder Improvisation and Technique, Book 1, 4th Ed. (IM Carley)
4. Notebook paper

Optional Materials (Strongly Recommended)
1. Pentatonic Song Books
2. Nursery Rhyme Books
3. Jump Jim Joe and/or Down in the Valley (New England Dancing Masters/Amidons)

Both required and optional materials will be available for on-site purchase through West Music Company.

Comfortable clothes and shoes appropriate for movement are recommended.

All necessary information may be found at: http://housing.uoregon.edu/summerhousing. Arrangements for residence hall lodging must be made through University Housing.

In addition to the this workshop, the University of Oregon will be host to the Oregon Bach Festival and Olympic Trials for Track & Field.  Therefore, for guaranteed housing, it is recommended that you make reservations by no later than May 15th.

Meals
As the housing URL indicates, the residence halls offer flexible meal plans. In addition, several fast food and moderate-priced restaurants are within walking distance of the School of Music.
