J. Robert Moore

J. Robert Moore is professor emeritus of music at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he teaches oboe and saxophone performance and woodwind techniques.  He taught here 1975-2005, emeritus 2003.

His Doctor of Musical Arts degree is from the Eastman School of Music where he was an oboe student of Robert Sprenkle. Other teachers have included Ray Still and Devere Moore (Chicago Symphony), Gladys Elliott (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Ronald Roseman (New York Woodwind Quintet, Yale), and Donald Baker (Detroit Symphony). Moore studied saxophone with Dwight Dailey at the University of Tulsa, and was subsequently a student of the legendary Marcel Mule for one year at the Paris National Conservatory of Music.

As recitalist, chamber and orchestral musician, Moore has performed many concerts in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Hungary, Cyprus, and Taiwan. In 2001 he was invited to teach the oboe class at the Yunnan Arts Institute in Kunming, China, as a guest professor.

Since coming to Oregon in 1975, he has performed extensively with the Oregon Wood wind Quintet, Oregon Mozart Players, Eugene Symphony, Oregon Bach Festival, Cascade Festival of Music, Eugene Ballet, Eugene Opera, Haydn Festival, Hindemith Festival, plus many concerts on the UO Faculty Artist Series and solo recitals at numerous other university campuses.

Moore has taught at universities in Texas, Illinois, New York, and Oregon. His former students have been accepted to the Yale Graduate School, Eastman School, San Francisco Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory, USC, Indiana University, the Mozarteum, University of Stuttgart, and the Hochschule fur Musik in Hannover.

Since 1992, when he received a Summer Research Award from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs of the University of Oregon, Moore has made several trips to Budapest and other cities in Hungary and Romania to do research on the Hungarian tarogato. He has done ten lecture-recitals on the instrument in the United States and Hungary.
