Gary Martin, Professor Emeritus

Gary Martin is professor emeritus of music, with special emphases in music education and music history.
Martin received the B.A. and M.A. degrees from Adams State College and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Oregon. Since his appointment to the University of Oregon faculty in 1966-2003 and emeritus in 2003, he has served as chair of the music education department, acting dean, and has taught a variety of classes in music education, research techniques, curriculum development in music, psychology of learning, and music literature.
Previously, Martin taught grades three through 12 in public and private schools, and he served as director of the German Center for International Music Education in Stuttgart, West Germany.
For many years Martin served as director of a faculty ensemble, the Earley Musick Pleyers, which specialized in instrumental music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He has authored or co-authored five books: Basic Concepts in Music, Musical Beginnings, Music in the Elementary School, Music and Art in the Western World, and Outline History of Western Music. Martin's articles and reviews have been published in professional journals in this country, Canada, and Germany.
Martin has been especially active in professional organizations at state, regional and national levels, holding Northwest regional chairs in several such organizations. He served as a co-host of the 16th biennial conference of the International Society for Music Education. He has been a member of the advisory board of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, the editorial board of the Journal of Research in Music Education, a member of the National Commission on Graduate Music Teacher Preparation and the President's National Advisory Committee of the Music Educators National Conference.
