Robert Hurwitz, Professor Emeritus

Robert Hurwitz

Robert Hurwitz became professor emeritus of music theory in 2003 having taught at the University of Oregon 1965-2006.

Hurwitz received the A.B. degree from Brooklyn College and both the M.Mus. (with distinction) and the Ph.D. degrees in music theory from Indiana University. He has taught a wide variety of courses in music theory and history at graduate and undergraduate levels.

Hurwitz is a member of the viola section of the Oregon Mozart Players, a locally based professional chamber orchestra, which he served as music director and conductor from 1982 to 1991. He is also the orchestra's Music Director Emeritus. From 1979 to 1982 he was associate conductor of the Eugene Opera, and he has conducted the University Symphony on several occasions. Hurwitz played with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra for 22 years, for most which serving as principal viola.

Hurwitz has served as consultant to theory programs at other colleges and universities and as a pre-publication reviewer for several publishers in the area of music theory. He is the program annotator for the Oregon Mozart Players, and served in that capacity with the Eugene Symphony for several years. He is also chair of the editorial board of the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy.

From 1969 to 1970 Hurwitz was a Fulbright lecturer in England. In 1979 he received the University of Oregon's Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Hurwitz is a faculty consultant in music for the Educational Testing Service's Advanced Placement Program. He served as Chief Reader in music from 1988-91. He has presented workshops on AP Music Theory for the College Board in both the USA and Canada, and regularly serves as a reader/grader for the Graduate Record Examination Advanced Music Test.
