Leslie Breidenthal, Professor Emeritus

Leslie Breidenthal

Leslie Breidenthal is professor emeritus of voice and lyric diction, teaching at the University of Oregon 1967-1991.

Breidenthal received his B.S. and M.S. from Columbia University and his D.M.A. from the University of Michigan. He has done other academic work at the University of Kansas, and the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy, and has studied under the auspices of the American Theatre Wing in New York City. In addition, he holds a diploma from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome.

Briedenthal was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for study in Italy, where he remained for five years as student and professional artist.

His teachers include Pierre Bernac, Estelle Liebling, Riccardo Stracciari, Gilda Alfano, and Sergio Nazor.

He was lead baritone with the Masque and Lyre Light Opera Company of New York City and has made numerous appearances in concert and oratorio. For several seasons he performed on NBC radio and television.

Besides his annual faculty recitals and frequent recital appearances throughout Oregon, Breidenthal has performed major roles in University of Oregon productions of "Man of La Mancha," "The Mikado," and "Madame Butterfly." As director of the University of Oregon Opera Theatre for nine years, he produced ten full-scale operas. He sang the title role in the Eugene Opera's production of "Don Pasquale."
