Gene Slayter, 1994 Distinguished Alumnus
Gene Slayter had an eventful year. At the top of the list was his selection for the John Philip Sousa Foundation Bandworld Legion of Honor. This program honors, over the course of a year, ten of the best band directors. Recipients have taught for at least 15 years, maintained a very high quality concert band program, and contributed significantly to the profession through dedication to bands and band music. Slayter recently retired as director of bands at Springfield High School after serving 44 years. He then turned right around and accepted a position at Oregon State University to work with their music education program. Slayter was also honored last spring as recipient of the UO School of Music's Distinguished Alumnus Award. He has served on the board of directors of Western International Band Clinic since its inception in 1980 and has been co-director of the UO Summer Band Camp since 1958. He is past president of the Northwest Bandmaster's and the Oregon Music Educators Association.
