Irish Musician Moloney to play Beall

Feb. 19, 2014—On Friday, March 7, fans of the traditional folk music of Ireland can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day a wee bit early on the University of Oregon campus. Folklorist and performer Mick Moloney will present a concert of Celtic tunes at 8 p.m. in historic Beall Concert Hall, the opening event of Eugene's annual Irish Cultural Festival.

Reserved seating tickets for the event cost $18 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors. Tickets will be available at the door, or in advance from the UO Ticket Office, 541-346-4363.

Joining Moloney for the Beall Hall performance are a pair of talented friends, multi-instrumentalist Michelle Mulcahy and fiddler Dana Lyn.

The concert is offered in conjunction with the UO’s World Music Series, which each year brings to the UO musicians hailing from various cultural traditions, to facilitate concerts for the community at large as well as educational experiences for UO students.

“People who know about Irish music, know about Mick Moloney,” said Juan Eduardo Wolf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology and coordinator of the UO World Music Series.

“Given his well-deserved reputation and demanding schedule, we are especially fortunate and honored to be able to have him join us,” continued Wolf.

Mick Moloney is Global Distinguished Professor of Music and Irish Studies at New York University. He immigrated to the United States in 1973 and was based in Philadelphia until moving to New York City in 2006. A musician and folklorist, he has recorded and produced over forty albums of traditional music. Moloney has also acted as advisor for scores of festivals and concerts all over America, and has served as artistic director for the musical ensemble The Green Fields of America. In 1999, Moloney was awarded the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts—the highest official honor a traditional artist can receive in the United States.
