Percussion

Students enrolled in the UO’s percussion studies program engage in an open and exciting learning environment in preparation for a professional career as a well-rounded, 21st century percussionist.

Weekly lessons provide diverse training in areas of percussion playing such as orchestral, solo, and chamber music. With the guidance of faculty members, students are encouraged to develop their own musical paths, while processing the necessary skills in all common areas of percussion playing.

Weekly studio classes cover a variety of topics such as improvisation, sight-reading, basic music business skills, instrument maintenance, and performance.

Members of the Oregon Percussion Ensemble generally perform three concerts annually. Repertoire performed includes new, cutting edge music by a vast array of 21st century composers, as well as the music of John Cage, Lou Harrison, Edgard Varése, Steve Reich, Frank Zappa, and many others.

Recent visiting guest artists include Eriko Daimo (solo marimbist), Casey Cangelosi (solo percussionist), Don Liuzzi (principal timpanist, Philadelphia Orchestra), Colin Currie (solo percussionist), Aiyun Huang (associate professor of percussion, McGill University), the “line upon line” ensemble, and Kevin Bobo (associate professor of percussion, Indiana University).

Degrees in music performance and music education are offered at the bachelors, master's, and doctoral (primary and supporting) levels.
