Master's Admission and Application Requirements

Any student who is admitted to a graduate program in music at the University of Oregon must currently possess the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree. A student accepted without an undergraduate degree in music may be admitted. Previous coursework will be audited and the student may be required to complete designated undergraduate music courses.

In addition to the general requirements outlined on the Graduate Music Admissions webpage, you must submit supplemental materials for your specific program as listed below. If your program requires an audition, please review the Graduate Audition Requirements for detailed information.

MA Musicology

  5. Take the Preliminary Written Exam for the Music Theory GE, a written test designed to evaluate your part-writing and analysis skills: download the exam, complete it, scan it, and email it to Dr. Jack Boss with the subject line: "Completed Preliminary GE Exam."
  6. Interview with the music theory faculty via Skype or in person. You will be contacted by a music theory faculty member with instructions.

MM Composition

    MM Conducting

    Emphasis in Choral, Orchestral, or Wind Ensemble

    MM Jazz Studies

    Emphasis in Instrumental Performance or Composition/Arranging

    8. In addition, for Jazz Composition and Arranging emphasis, submit two representative scores and recordings of arrangements and/or compositions for jazz ensemble. At least one of these pieces should be scored for a large ensemble (ten or more performers).

    MM Music Education

    Note: Masters music education applicants must have a baccalaureate in music education.

    MM Performance

    All saxophone applicants must submit a preliminary audition recording by December 10. This recording should be submitted be via the admissions file upload webpage. Please review the Graduate Audition Requirements for details.

    All violin and viola performance and pedagogy must prepare and perform an audition based on the MM requirements for your primary instrument and submit a high-quality video recording of teaching, preferably in both group and private string instruction settings, no less than 30 minutes in length. This may be waived if the applicant has no prior teaching experience. 

    Note that any student admitted on the basis of a recorded performance must perform a placement audition upon arrival on campus to begin studies.

    MM Piano Pedagogy
