The University of Oregon's woodwind program involves studies with
professional artist/teachers who are actively performing. There
are also many opportunities for students to develop their performance
and audition skills through weekly performance classes, solo and
chamber music recitals, and special classes with visiting artists.
Woodwind performance students at the School of Music and Dance
have the opportunity to participate in large ensembles including
the University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Wayne
Bennett; Oregon Wind Ensemble conducted by Robert
Ponto; Oregon Symphonic Band directed by Timothy
Paul; Oregon Marching Band directed by Eric
Wiltshire; and jazz bands and combos under the direction of
Steve Owen. While most
of the students participating in ensembles are music majors, ensembles
are open to students majoring in other fields.
Performance degrees are offered at the Bachelor, Master's and
Doctoral (Primary and Supporting) levels. The University of Oregon
also maintains a strong program in music education, where students
have the opportunity to enroll in specialized course work leading
to degrees in Music Education.
