GRADUATE STUDY
Conducting at the UO School of Music and Dance Graduate study in choral or
instrumental conducting is offered either as an area of major emphasis
for the master of music degree, or as a supporting area for the
doctor of musical arts or doctor of philosophy degrees.
The choral conducting program is designed to provide a breadth
of study ranging from fundamental ensemble development and knowledge
of choral repertory to experience with professional choral and
instrumental ensembles under the tutelage of internationally recognized
conductors. Choral conductors participate in the University's widely
acclaimed Oregon Bach Festival, held in the summer.
The choral faculty is drawn from several departments of the School of Music and Dance and possesses a thorough and varied background in choral
music.
The curriculum in instrumental conducting is designed for advanced
preparation of college or high school instrumental directors. The
core curriculum includes advanced studies in the techniques of
conducting, repertory, rehearsal strategies and psychology, and
advanced study on the student's major instrument. The flexible
nature of the degree allows the student to select additional work
from music history, advanced analysis, score reading, performance
practices, or advanced pedagogy in strings, woodwinds, brass or
percussion.
Limited enrollment in these conducting programs provides for a
substantial practicum experience on the podium as well as close
guidance from faculty members. Conducting students work with the
major concert organizations in the School of Music and Dance.
