Stephen Stone

Stephen Stone is Professor Emeritus of Music.
Before retirement he served as Assistant to
the Dean and Associate Professor in jazz history,
choral music, and music education. He came
to the University of Oregon in 1976.
Stone holds the B.S. and M.S. degrees and
received the D.M.A. in music education and
music history from the University of Oregon
in 1971.
A native Oregonian, Stone taught for more
than 20 years in Oregon public schools in Dayton,
Klamath Falls, and Beaverton.
He is past president of the Oregon Music Educators
Association and the Northwest Division of the
Music Educators National Conference (MENC),
and has served on several commissions and committees
for both MENC and OMEA. He has extensive experience
as a clinician and adjudicator in both choral
and instrumental music, and has judged at the
OMEA State Solo Contest and the OMEA State
Choral Contest.
Stone has served as an evaluator of music
education programs for the National Commission
for the Accreditation of Teacher Education,
the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices
Commission, and the Oregon State Department
of Education.
From 1976-1993 he served as manager for the
School of Music's Chamber Music Series, bringing
more than 80 internationally-known chamber
groups to Eugene.
Stone has directed several UO choral groups,
including University Chorale, Contemporary
Chorus, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. In 1982
he and colleague Janet Descutner founded the
University Song and Dance Troupe, which continues
to serve as a public relations performing group
for the university.
He has taught extensively in the field of
jazz history and popular music since 1981,
and has served as a lecturer for the Oregon
Festival of American Music. He has written
several articles on popular music and has produced
“Jazz Songbook,” a series of weekly programs
for public radio. Stone is also a professional
jazz trombonist.
