Janet Stewart

Janet J. Stewart is Assistant to the Dean and Director of the
Chamber Music Series at the School of Music. She came to UO in
1991 from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University
in New Jersey, where she was the Administrator for the Department
of Music. She has also held academic appointments at Sweet Briar
College in Virginia and Emory University and Agnes Scott College
in Atlanta, Georgia.
Prior to rejoining the academic community,
she was the Executive Director of the Plainfield
Symphony, and the Artistic Director of the
Opera Theater of New Jersey--where the company
received statewide recognition for its arts-in-education
component, Opera Works.
Stewart received her undergraduate music degree
from Murray State University in Kentucky and
her Master of Music Degree from the University
of Colorado.
Before being invited to assume leadership
roles in the field of arts administration,
she performed leading roles with many outstanding
American opera companies, including the Opera
Society of Washington at the Kennedy Center
and with the Philadelphia Lyric, the Connecticut,
Denver, and Kentucky Opera Companies, and the
Piedmont, Shreveport,and Atlanta Opera Theaters.
Her oratorio performances included Britten's
War Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony, Robert
Shaw conducting, and other appearances with
the Denver, Pennsylvania, and New Orleans Symphonies.
In addition, Stewart was also a frequent finalist
in national vocal competitions, including the
Metropolitan Opera auditions.
At the University of Oregon, she is the Manager
of Beall Concert Hall and the School of Music
building--one of the busiest buildings on campus.
Her duties include scheduling all performances,
overseeing the box office functions, and organizing
all of the logistical concerns in presenting
public performances, as well as conventions
and conferences.
