Edward Kammerer
Ed Kammerer was an associate professor of
horn, music theory, and jazz studies at the
University of Oregon School of Music. In addition,
he directed the University of Oregon Brass
Choir, and served as coordinator of Undergraduate
Studies at the School.
Professor Kammerer performed frequently with
University-based ensembles such as the Oregon
Brass Quintet, the Oregon Woodwind Quintet,
the Oregon Jazz Quartet, and the Kammerer-Dowd
Duo. He also performed as a hornist with the
Eugene Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Mozart
Players, the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra,
the National Symphony of New York, Claremont
(Los Angeles) Festival Orchestra, Westchester
Philharmonic Society, Peter Britt and Cascade
Festival Orchestras, and many others.
As a composer and arranger, he created works
that have been played by the Eugene Symphony
Pops and other pops orchestras around the country.
He wrote a piece for solo piano and digitally-sequenced
synthesizer (“Villard Vignettes”) under commission
for the UO Villard Hall Centennial, which was
placed in the time capsule created for that
event.
Having performed and toured with various groups
in the continental U.S., Alaska, Central America,
and Europe, Professor Kammerer has also appeared
in performance numerous times for various branches
of the Oregon state government and the Legislative
Assembly. In 1983 he was appointed Musician
Laureate for the State of Oregon by then-governor
Victor Atiyeh.
The Edward W. Kammerer Computer Lab is located
in what was Ed Kammerer's office for many years.
This has seemed especially appropriate, as
he was among the School's earliest and most
enthusiastic explorers of electronic technology
for use in musical research and performance.
