Peter Bergquist is professor emeritus of music history, music theory, and bassoon, and has taught at the University of Oregon since 1964.

Bergquist, native of California, received the B.S. degree from Mannes College of Music in 1958, the M.A. degree in 1960, and the Ph.D. degree in 1964, both from Columbia University.

Bergquist's scholarly publications have covered aspects of Renaissance and late Romantic music and theory as well as Schenkerian analysis. His current research into the music of Orlando di Lasso includes preparation of editions for Lasso's Sämtliche Werke, Neue Reihe, published by Bärenreiter, and for the series, Recent Researches in the Music of the Renaissance, published by A-R Editions. In 1994 he received a three-year grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities for a new edition of Lasso's motets, to be published by AR in 21 volumes.

Other studies have appeared in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Acta Musicologica, and Music Forum. His reviews have appeared in a number of American journals, and he has contributed several articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

Bergquist has held national and regional offices in the American Musicological Society, and he is a member of several other professional organizations. He received a Fulbright Senior Research Award for study of Lasso's music in West Germany in 1985, and a similar award from The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 1992 and the American Council of Learned Societies in 1994.

As a bassoon performer, Bergquist was a member of the Oregon Woodwind Quintet for 19 years and played with the Eugene Symphony for 11 years. As a member of these and other groups, he performed widely throughout the Pacific Northwest and in New York.
